...I had two good interviews this week.

One I'll be calling back in a couple hours, but the other job that I'd honestly probably rather have will be getting back to me next week. Neither are a sure thing though. Trying to figure out how to "defer" an answer until I've heard back from both to see which ends up best.

Advice oppo?

Edit: thanks so far. Have a gif

Do they know what your current work situation is?

Are you working currently? Can you say that you would like to call them after your current work hours have expired so as to not be misusing company time with personal business?

If Company A offers you a job before Company B, it's perfectly ok to tell Company A that you had another interview recently and you want to see if you get both offers before deciding.

Just wrapped up the job search stuff myself. A flat, "Your offer is very interesting. Of course, I'd like a few days to consider it. Would *insert desired date here* be okay for a decision?" More than about a week, unless it's very unusual and/or high-powered circumstances, isn't usually reasonable to ask. You can also play the, "need to confer with spouse", "model and consider it in light of housing/transportation/commute/childcare" type cards, too. Or even, "Your offer is very interesting. I have another offer coming on Tuesday. I'd like to compare the two and decide on Wednesday. Would that work for you?". If they push back, and the interview/application process had been lengthy (took 3 months for me, and they were fast compared to others), you can always say, "Well, it's been 8 weeks since I applied for this position. It's an important decision for both of us. I think 5 days to mull it over is pretty reasonable." In any case, good luck! Hope you land a great job!

Unless they've signaled that they need you on the books by the end of the year or something it's perfectly fine to let HR know you've got a couple irons in the fire and when you'll give them a final answer by.

Stall as long as possible and if you have to accept job A, accept it. If job B turns out to be a lot better quit job A.

Be upfront, and use that to your advantage. Let both companies know that you are interviewing for other jobs, just as they are interviewing other candidates. Tell them both that of the two, you'd prefer that job, and if you got a compelling offer you'd accept it. However, you can't wait too long.

That creates a sense of urgency with them if they think you are a quality candidate, without being high-pressure.
It will get them to move quicker.
